Mason A. Carpenter (Ph.D., 1997, UT Austin), an award-winning teacher and accomplished researcher, passed away on September 22, 2011 after a year-long battle with cancer; he was 50. One of the first authors to sign with Flat World, his books (Principles of Management, International Business) reflect his worldview that national borders are bridges, not barriers.
Mason served as professor of Strategic Management, M. Keith Weikel Professor in Leadership and associate dean of Evening and Executive MBA programs in the University of Wisconsin’s School of Business. His research concerned corporate governance, top management teams, social networks, and the strategic management of global startups. He was widely published in management and strategy journals. He served as associate editor of the Academy of Management Review and the strategic management area editor for Business Expert Press. Mason’s many honors include the 2010 Distinguished Teaching Award, UW-Madison's highest honor for teaching, and being selected Professor of the Year by MBA students, as well as one of the two most popular professors in several BusinessWeek MBA program polls. He was also the author of Strategic Management: A Dynamic Perspective, with co-author Gerry Sanders and published by Prentice Hall.
